The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra is not just a trek—it’s a spiritual calling. Nestled in the dramatic heights of Himachal Pradesh, this pilgrimage takes you through pristine valleys, challenging trails, and soul-stirring scenery. For many, reaching the sacred Kinner Kailash Shivling is a life-changing experience. The Kinner Kailash Shivlingam trek is a spiritually significant and physically demanding journey nestled in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It's renowned for its 79-foot tall vertical rock formation—believed to be a natural representation of Lord Shiva's Lingam—which changes color as the sunlight moves through the day, adding to its mystical aura.

Overview of the Yatra

Location: Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, India

Altitude: Up to ~5,650 meters (Kinner Kailash Shivling)

Duration: 2 to 3 days, depending on pace, acclimatization, and weather conditions.

Best Time to Visit: The trek is undertaken during July– September by devotees, especially during the annual Kinner Kailash Yatra.

Spiritual Significance: The Kinner Kailash is believed to be the winter abode of Lord Shiva. The 79-foot vertical rock pillar (Shivling) is the main highlight and is considered sacred.

Folklore and Mythological Significance of Kinner Kailash

🕉️ Abode of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati

Kinner Kailash is believed to be one of the five mythological abodes of Lord Shiva, similar in sanctity to Mount Kailash in Tibet. The 79-foot vertical Shivlingam seen perched among the peaks is believed to be a divine manifestation of Shiva himself. According to legend, Goddess Parvati created a natural pond known as Parvati Kund, located near the Kinner Kailash peak. It is said she performed intense meditation here, and the site remains a symbol of her penance and love. The region is also described as the sacred meeting place of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati, radiating divine energy that attracts pilgrims and sadhus.

Itinerary for 8 Devi Darshan Package from Katra

Day 1

Tangling to Ashiqui Park ( Ganesh Park or Kailash Darshan Park)

Night Stay : Chamunda

Distance: ~8–9 km
Altitude Gain: 7,050 ft → 11,762 ft
Trek Duration: ~6–8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous (especially the Kailash Dhaar section)

🚩 Starting Point: Tangling Village
Located on the left bank of the Sutlej River, Tangling is a picturesque Kinnauri village at 7,050 ft. It can be accessed via two routes:

Jhoola Pul (Suspension Bridge) at Powari – a thrilling entry point

Dirt road via Shontong Bridge over the Sutlej – less adventurous but more direct

The village, home to about 100 families, is set amid apple orchards, vegetable fields, and offers a glimpse of the traditional Nag Devta Temple, dedicated to the local deity. The roar of the Sutlej echoes through the valley.

🥾 Trail to the First Halt: The Stream (~2.5 km / 1.5 hours)
The trail begins on a metalled path, gently rising through Wooden houses, Terraced fields, Orchards of apples and seasonal crops. After 1.5 hours, you reach a freshwater stream descending from the Kinner Kailash range. It’s your last water source before Ashiqui Park, so fill up here. The stream is also seen again near Bheem Dwar on Day 2. Rest here to soak in views of the valley and the Sutlej, and prepare for the next strenuous stretch.

🧗‍♂️ The Steep Climb: Kailash Dhaar (~6–7 km)
This challenging section earns the name Kailash Dhaar, the spiritual path toward the divine.

🌲 Key Stops Along the Way:
Bara Pathar (8,415 ft / ~2.5 km from stream). Trek through dense Deodar forests to reach Bara Pathar, a massive rock sits here, a common resting point for pilgrims. Enjoy panoramic views of the Sutlej valley and villages below.

Bara Ped (9,695 ft / ~2.5 km further) - Famous for an ancient Deodar tree said to be centuries old. It marks the end of the forest line — vegetation thins after this point. Along this route, you’ll find wild jungle strawberries—small energy boosters gifted by the Himalayas themselves!

Arrival: Ashiqui Park (11,778 ft) - After crossing Bugyals (alpine meadows), you reach Ashiqui Park—a wide, grassy expanse and the ideal campsite. The area now known as Ganesh Park or Kailash Darshan Park was once lovingly referred to by locals as "Ashiqui Park"—a place symbolizing the divine romance between Shiva and Parvati. It is said that the cosmic couple spent time here in solitude, making it one of the most sacred and romantic legends in Himalayan mythology. At night, the moonlit view of Kinner Kailash is ethereal.  Night stay at Ganesh Park.

Day 2

Ashiqui Park to Kinner Kailash Peak

Night Stay : Ganesh Park

Altitude Gain: 11,762 ft to 15,004 ft
Distance: ~8–10 km
Trek Duration: 7–9 hours (one way, depending on fitness)

Early Morning Start
You have to start your ascent early from Ashiqui Park ( Ganesh park), as it would be a long and demanding day. This leg of the pilgrimage is both spiritually significant and physically demanding, with notable stops at Bheem Dwar and Parvati Kund.

Segment 1: Ashiqui Park to Bheem Dwar
Distance: ~3–4 km

Altitude: 12,400 ft

Duration: 1.5–2 hours

The initial climb from Ashiqui Park will be steep climb for about 2 kms. After this climb, the path gradually descends toward Bheem Dwar. Just before reaching Bheem Dwar, you have to cross a stream—part of a glacier—which is usually frozen. Bheem Dwar is a natural shelter formed under massive boulders. It can accommodate around 10–15 people and is often used for camping. Water is plentiful here, and the soothing sound of the nearby stream creates a peaceful ambiance.

Segment 2: Bheem Dwar to Parvati Kund
Distance: ~3 km

Altitude: ~13,500 ft

Duration: 2.5–3 hours

This leg will be more challenging. The first half of the trail will be  a vertical cliff, requiring serious effort and concentration. The remaining path to Parvati Kund will be strewn with rocks, boulders, and snow. There will be no water sources between Bheem Dwar and Parvati Kund, so you have refill your bottles before moving on.

Parvati Kund is a small glacial lake, frozen at the time of our visit. Pilgrims often stop here to offer prayers to Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva, seeking strength for the final ascent.

Segment 3: Parvati Kund to Kinner Kailash Peak (Lingam)
Distance: ~2.5 km

Altitude: 15,004 ft

Duration: 3–4 hours

This will be the most strenuous section of the trek. It will be  a vertical ascent across moraine fields, with narrow paths and unstable rocks. You have to be extremely cautious, especially around stone tunnels and caves. The trail is marked only by stone pillars, and there is no water on this stretch, so carry enough from Parvati Kund.

Kinner Kailash Shivling
Finally, you will reach the sacred Kinner Kailash Shivling—a massive vertical rock pillar, approximately 79 feet high and 30–40 feet wide. It is revered as the Lingam of Lord Shiva and faces towards Reckong Peo and Kalpa. Standing near the Shiv Linga you will feel the palpable spiritual energy of the place. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Jorkandan and Mt. Rangrik.

Return to Ashiqui Park
After spending some time in reflection and reverence, began your descent, retracing our steps carefully. The return will take less time but still required caution, especially while descending steep and rocky sections. Night stay will be at Ashiqui Park ( Ganesh Park).

Day 3

Ashiqui Park ( Ganesh Park or Kailash Darshan Park) to Tangling

Night Stay : Kalpa

Descent to Tangling & Drive to Reckong Peo

Began our descent back toward down to Tangling village. The descent, though less physically demanding than the ascent, requires constant attention. From Ashiqui Park, the trail continues downwards through steep forested sections and boulder paths until you will  reach Tangling village, your starting point of the trek. From Tangling we will drive you to Reckong Peo for night stay.

Day 4

Return Journey – Reckong Peo to Shimla/Chandigarh

After a restful night in Reckong Peo, check out from your hotel and prepare for the journey back.

Travel Options:
By Bus: Regular HRTC buses are available from Reckong Peo to both Shimla and Chandigarh. You can catch an early morning or overnight bus, depending on your schedule. It’s a scenic drive through the winding mountain roads, offering one last glimpse of the beautiful Kinnaur Valley.
